Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs, that can be life-threatening if it travels to the lungs. Clinical trials investigate novel anticoagulants, compression therapies, and thrombus removal techniques.
Leg swelling, pain or tenderness, warmth over the affected area, red or discolored skin, visible surface veins, leg cramping (often in calf)
Prolonged immobility, surgery or trauma, cancer, pregnancy, obesity, smoking, oral contraceptives, age (over 60), inherited clotting disorders, family history
Treatment includes anticoagulant medications (warfarin, heparin, DOACs), compression stockings, and in severe cases, thrombectomy or thrombolysis. Clinical trials explore factor XI inhibitors with lower bleeding risk, novel reversal agents, and catheter-directed thrombolysis techniques.
DVT clinical trials help develop safer anticoagulants with lower bleeding risk and improved strategies for preventing post-thrombotic syndrome.
